In the original Marvel Universe (Earth-616), Galactus is a cosmic force of nature. In Earth-9997, the role of Galactus is revealed to be a defensive mechanism against Celestial seeds.
The current Galactus is actually Franklin Richards (the son of Reed and Sue). He took on the mantle to protect the universe, served by his Heralds, including a transformed Shalla-Bal.
